Sun President & COO Speaks Out

A Quick Round-Up of What Jonathan Schwartz Said Yesterday in San Francisco About the GPL, OpenSolaris, Java, and "IP Colonialism

Sun's President and COO, Jonathan Schwartz (pictured below), opened the Open Source Business Conference yesterday in San Francisco with a keynote that at once hit the headlines. For the super-busy, here's a very brief round-up of the highlights from his address:

[On FOSS]

  • "Free and open source software is a vital part to the evolution of the network."

    [On the GPL]

  • "Imagine a developing nation that elects to use free software in the construction of its IP and then finds that is has a rather predatory obligation to give back all the IP to the wealthiest nation in the world that happens to be the author of the GPL."

    [On the MPL]

  • "The Mozilla Public License...restricts from the issuer any power to change the license and predetermines all disputes must be heard in Santa Clara, California (not good if you're a Bolivian developer)."

    [On Sun's CDDL License]

  • "It's a genuine attempt to lower barriers to entry."

    [On Sun Not Open-Sourcing Java]

  • "Our refusal has nothing to do with Sun being proprietary and everything to do with wanting to keep Java from forking."

    [On Microsoft]

  • "There's only one company that's yet to join the JCP. You can figure out who it is..."

Has the solaris code actually been released though? Isn't it still imminent rather than actual? What has there been after the (small) initial drop? When will the rest of the source code due diligence be completed?

So Sun's OpenSolaris strategy isn't just a ploy to attract Linux users to Solaris? It's not a zero-sum game? I wonder who'll be proven right...

Schwartz knew that this would be reported right around the world. The keynote should have been given by IBM not Sun. Or JBoss.
